KARATE is an art of self defence and a sport, which has in recent years proliferated world wide. It is now the most widely practiced of oriental material arts.

The roots of karate can be traced to ancient India, China and Okinawa. India which developed “Yoga” and its diaphragmatic breathing methods, has exerted Influence on most of the material art of the Orient.it is thought at the end of 5th Century A.D., a Buddhist priest named traveled to China from India to Buddhism. The journey was long and dangerous requiring great physical endurance and mental control. During the journey he set forth a mental and physical discipline that is contained in the “EKKIN” Sutra of Buddhist teachings. He founded monastery lacked both the physical and mental stamina to withstand the rigours of hard life is monastery, he introduced a special system of physical training. Which later on became famous as “shaolin Kung-Fu”. As the art proliferated throughout China, Variations and local styles appeared.

The fighting system of China were subsequently carried to offshore islands, notably Okinawa. Where it became famous as”Okinawa-te”. (literally ‘te’ means hands) or Karate (karate means empty). In 1927, a famous Okinawa karate expert Ghichin Frnakoshi was invented to japan by Ministry of Education to give demonstration in presence of the Japanese Emperor. A series of demonstration was followed most of them in presence of groups of intellectuals. These were so well received that in 1933 he returned to take up permanent residence of Japan. In 1936 he opened a permanent training centre. The became known as “Shotokan” or Shoto’s house or hall, shoto being Funakoshi’s pen name. “Shotokan” was eventually to became the name of the style he ptacticed, thus became the first recognized style of karate to be taught in the world.
